ALLENDALE, Mich. – The #15 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team took down Ferris State, 60-57, at the buzzer on Sunday afternoon. Junior
Brooke McKinley drilled a three-pointer with under a second remaining to break the 57-57 tie which gave the Lakers (10-1) their sixth straight win. The Bulldogs fall to 3-8 on the season.
Tied at 55-55 with 1:10 to go, Ferris State knocked down a jumper to take the lead before
Hannah Kulas answered with 52 seconds left to even the game at 57-57. The Lakers had the ball with a six second difference on the shot clock and Ferris State stole the ball, but missed the layup on the other end. GVSU grabbed the rebound and called timeout to advance the ball. The ball was inbounded by
Qay Stanton who passed it to McKinley for the game-winning bucket.
Kulas led the Lakers with 15 points and nine rebounds, while freshman
Rylie Bisballe recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. McKinley also finished in double-figures with 10 points.
Ferris State took the early lead at 4-2, but GVSU went on a 12-0 run the next four minutes of play to open up a 14-4 advantage. The Lakers would lead 21-10 after the first 10 minutes of play. In the second quarter, GVSU increased their lead to 29-12 before Ferris State ended the final eight minutes of the half on a 14-3 run to cut the Laker lead to 32-26 at the break.
The Lakers opened the second half scoring the first nine points and would lead 47-32 with 4:07 left in the third quarter. Once again, Ferris State answered and ended the quarter on yet another 14-3 run to bring the score to 50-46 entering the fourth quarter. The final frame was neck and neck with the Bulldogs taking their first lead since 4-2 at the 3:25 mark of the fourth quarter. The two teams traded baskets the final minutes before the McKinley game-winning shot.
GVSU will be back in action next weekend as they travel to the U.P to take on Northern Michigan.
