ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team finished off the series sweep of Parkside in straight sets on Saturday afternoon, 25-18, 25-17, and 25-21, at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 2-0, while the Rangers drop to 0-2.
Junior
Abby Graham led GVSU with 11 kills and a .344 attack percentage, while sophomore
Jaelianna Primus recorded nine kills and nine total blocks, including four solo blocks. Sophomore setter
Rachel Jacquay tallied 27 assists and junior
Ali Thompson had a team-high 11 digs. As a team, the Lakers had 16 total blocks compared to Parkside's one and outhit the Rangers .224 to .018.
After Parkside took an early 5-4 lead in set one, the Lakers scored eight straight points to build a 12-5 lead. The Rangers climbed back and cut the deficit to 22-18, but the Lakers finished the set strong with a
Karlie Kucharczyk kill and took advantage of two Parkside errors. In set two, the Lakers jumped out to an 8-0 lead and would lead by as many as 11 points in the set. Parkside got the score within six points before the Lakers claimed the set at 25-17. GVSU led 14-11 in set three before Parkside took the lead at 18-16 looking to force a fourth set. The Lakers answered however, and scored the next six points and ended the match on an
Emma Clines kill.
The Lakers will be back in action next Thursday (Feb. 25) as they travel to Wayne State to take on the 2-0 Warriors at 6:00 PM.
