#11 GVSU travels to Northern Michigan

The Lakers will play their final away games of the regular season this weekend

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The #11 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team will head across the bridge to take on Northern Michigan in a pair of games this weekend. Game one will be played on Saturday at 1:00 PM with game two on Sunday tipping off at 1:00 PM as well.
 
GVSU (10-1) is currently tied with Michigan Tech (10-1) atop the GLIAC standings with seven games remaining. The GLIAC Tournament will feature all 12 teams with the top four seeds getting a bye to the quarterfinals. First round matchups will be hosted by the higher seed with the winners advancing to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals will all take place at Purdue Northwest on Friday March 5, Saturday March 6, and Sunday March 7.
 
GLIAC Standings
 
The Lakers are coming off a sweep of Ferris State, highlighted by a Brooke McKinley game-winning three-pointer on Sunday in a 60-57 win. On Saturday, GVSU used a big fourth quarter to take down the Bulldogs, 72-57. Junior forward Hannah Kulas led the team in scoring both games, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in game one, before dropping 15 points in Sunday's win. Junior Emily Spitzley (15.9 ppg.) and Kulas (14.5 ppg.) are the only Lakers averaging in double-figures, while McKinley (7.2 ppg.), Samantha Gehrls (7.0 ppg.), and Rylie Bisballe (6.1 ppg.) are all averaging over six points per game.
 
Northern Michigan enters the weekend with a 7-4 record after splitting with Northwood last weekend. The Wildcats are led by Makaylee Kuhn, the second leading scorer in the GLIAC, who averages 20.0 points per game and 6.6 rebounds. GVSU and NMU are ranked second and third respectively in scoring defense amongst GLIAC teams with both squads giving up less than 61 points per game. Last season, the Lakers swept the season series, defeating the Wildcats 58-41 in Allendale and 53-38 in Marquette.
