Lakers Defeat the Lewis Flyers on the Road

GVSU Women’s Basketball Advances to 10-1

The Grand Valley State women's basketball team is now 10-1 on the year after they defeated the Lewis Flyers on Monday, Dec. 20. GVSU's 65-60 victory over the Flyers is the fifth win in a row for the Lakers.

It was a close, back and forth four quarters in the Laker and Flyer matchup today. Despite trailing 15-9 halfway through the first quarter, GVSU shot 50% from the floor and 40% from behind the arc to give the Lakers a 21-19 advantage heading into the second quarter. A pair of free throws from sophomore Ellie Droste gave the Lakers a four point lead at the beginning of the second, but GVSU was unable to pull away. Lewis outscored the Lakers in the second 14-10 and the Flyers took the advantage 33-31 at halftime.

Senior Qay Stanton scored seven of GVSU's 14 points in the third quarter and after going basket for basket with the Flyers, it was an even ball game at 45-45 heading into the fourth quarter. Shooting 54% in the fourth, the Lakers were able to extend their lead to seven with 3:30 left. The Flyers were able to get it within two with 13 seconds left, but after three made free throws from sophomore Ryle Bisballe, the Lakers won 65-60.

The Lakers finished shooting 41% from the floor, 16% from three, and were 14-17 from behind the charity stripe. GVSU scored 36 of their 65 points in the paint and scored 15 second chance points off of 13 offensive rebounds. The Lakers were led by sophomore Rylie Bisballe who finished with 22 points and eight rebounds, followed by senior Hannah Kulas who scored 14 points and grabbed six boards for the Lakers. Qay Stanton finished 10 points and five rebounds.

The Lakers will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 31 as they host Central State. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m.
