GVSU Women’s Basketball Takes Down Aquinas Saints

Lakers advance to 9-1 on the season

The Grand Valley State women's team is now on a four game winning streak after defeating the Aquinas Saints 50-38 on Friday, Dec. 17 at home. The Lakers advance to 9-1 on the season with a GLIAC record of 3-1. 

It was a slow start offensively for both the Lakers and the Saints, with the first basket of the game finally scored at the 6:45 mark by senior Hannah Kulas. It wasn't until there were 13 seconds left in the first quarter that the Lakers took the lead again 9-7. Despite only shooting 20% in the first quarter, the Lakers were able to shoot 6-12 in the second and head into halftime with a 25-18 advantage. Sophomore Ellie Droste led the Lakers in the first half with nine points. 

After leading 34-28 at the end of the third quarter, the Lakers defensive efforts held the Saints to just 17% in the fourth. GVSU shot 38% from the floor and 100% from three in the fourth, outscoring Aquinas 16-10 in the final quarter to give the Lakers a 50-38 win over the Saints.

The Lakers finished shooting 31% from the floor and 17% from three. GVSU grabbed 44 boards, including 14 offensive rebounds, and scored 28 of their 50 points in the paint. All 10 Lakers that saw action in today's game scored for GVSU. The Lakers were led by sophomore Ellie Droste who finished with 11 points and three rebounds, followed by sophomore Rylie Bisballe who scored nine points and grabbed six boards for the Lakers. 

The Lakers will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 20 as they travel to Lewis University. Tip off is set for 2:00 p.m. CST (3:00 p.m. EST).
