GVSU Falls In NCAA Regional Action

Lakers conclude season 10-2

#4 Grand Valley State dropped a 54-20 decision at #1 Ferris State Saturday afternoon in NCAA Super Region 3 action. The Lakers conclude the 2021 campaign with a 10-2 record.

Ferris State opened the scoring early in the first quarter, but Grand Valley State answered quickly with a 4-play, 79-yard scoring drive. Sophomore QB Cade Peterson hit freshman receiver Cody Tierney with a quick slant that Tierney took 66 yards. Peterson then hit senior RB Bryce Young-Walls with a 6-yard scoring pass and freshman place kicker Kollin Kralapp added the PAT. However, that would be all of the scoring for the Lakers in the first half and the Bulldogs led 33-7 at the half. After trading punts to open the second half, Ferris State took advantage of a tipped pass that was intercepted and turn it into points.

Young-Walls scored on a 3-yard run late in the third quarter and Peterson connected with junior WR Hunter Rison on a 15-yard pass and catch for a touchdown with 6:17 left in the contest.

Peterson completed 16-of-35 passes for 210 yards and two TDs, while sophomore RB Tariq Reid  led the ground game with 39 yards on five carries. Young-Walls added 37 yards on eight carries. Rison hauled in six passes for 62 yards and a TD, while Tierney caught three passes for 83 yards. Junior TE Jayk Slager caught two passes for 23 yards and junior WR Jacob Miller hauled in two passes for 21 yards. Sophomore LB Abe Swanson led the defense with eight tackles, followed by sophomore DE Christian McCarroll's seven stops. Freshman safety Damonte McCurdy chipped in six tackles and senior DE Jake Hlava added five tackles. Senior CB Allante Leapheart led the secondary with two pass break ups, while fellow senior CB Tory Lewis tallied one pass break up.

Senior CB Tory Lewis, WR Juwan Johnson, CB Allante Leapheart, DE Jake Hlava, RB Bryce Young-Walls, LB Antonio Crosby, TE Grant Dempster, DE Xavier Washington, OC Ethan Culberson and DT Dennis Johnson each concluded their careers for the Lakers on the gridiron.
