ALLENDALE, Mich. – The top-seeded Grand Valley State Lakers outlasted the Cedarville Yellow Jackets Thursday (Nov. 18) with a 2-1 overtime win on a windy and snowy day in the opening round of the NCAA Midwest Regional. The Lakers improve to 19-1-2 on the season and will face 5-seed Indianapolis in a regional semifinal Saturday (Nov. 20) morning at 11 AM.
In the 98' it was
Kennedy Bearden, played through by
Greta DeLoach, sent a long-range strike over the leaping goalkeeper and into the far corner netting to send the Lakers through to the next round. Cedarville's keeper had already made five stops in the game and entered the match with a save percentage over 90.
The Lakers forced extra time with a goal late in the second half. Down since the 20' mark, the Lakers earned a corner in the 78' and took advantage.
Brooke Russell's insert was difficult to deal with and the loose ball pinged to Bearden, who slid the ball in front of goal for
Cecilia Steinwascher to tap home to equalize.
The Lakers will look to reach the Midwest Regional title game for the 12
th straight time as they face off against Indianapolis Saturday morning. The live stream will be available free of charge at gvsulakers.com/watch and @GVSUSoccer on Twitter will provide live updates.
