Lakers Fall to Saginaw Valley in Four Sets

GVSU Volleyball back in action tomorrow against Wayne State

The Grand Valley State women's volleyball team fell to the Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Oct. 9. The Lakers are now 9-6 overall and 5-2 in the GLIAC.

After winning the first set 25-18, the Lakers struggled with the Cardinal defense the rest of the match. It wasn't until it was tied at 20-20 in set two that the Lakers were finally able to take their biggest advantage of the set, 22-20. GVSU wasn't able to hold off the Cardinals and fell in set two 23-25. The Lakers were unable to take the lead at any point in the third set and the Cardinals took home set three 21-25. In the fourth and final set, the Lakers fell 19-25.

The Lakers finished the match with 49 kills (.118 hitting percentage), 93 digs, and five aces. While GVSU tallied five blocks, the Lakers struggled against SVSU's defense which finished with 14 blocks.

Senior Abby Graham and junior Jaelianna Primus tallied 13 kills a piece and Primus also finished with three blocks. Senior Ali Thompson finished with eights kills, four blocks, 20 digs, and one ace. Junior Erin O'Leary also tallied three aces, four assists, and 21 digs.

"I thought Saginaw did a great job of making us uncomfortable the whole match. Their block and defense forced us to extend points and have to work hard for every point we earned. I'm looking forward to regrouping and getting a chance to compete again tomorrow against a talented Wayne State team.

The Lakers are back in action tomorrow at Wayne State at 2:00 p.m.
