Lakers Defeat Davenport in Four Sets

GVSU Takes Home Big Win on Senior Day and Alumni Day

The Grand Valley State volleyball team defeated the Davenport Panthers on Saturday, Oct. 30. The Lakers are now 8-4 in the GLIAC and 15-8 overall. 

In set one, the Lakers were off to a strong start with a 9-2 lead. The Lakers were able to maintain the lead the rest of the set and won 25-17. GVSU had another well-played set two as they took home the second set 25-13. Davenport took the lead early in set three, starting the match off 13-3. GVSU was unable to bridge the gap and the Lakers fell 25-18 in the third set. The Lakers and Panthers were going point for point to start the fourth. The set was tied at 6-6 before the Lakers took the advantage 11-7, and after kills from senior Jayla Wesley and junior Wight the Lakers led 18-10. The Panthers late effort wasn't enough as GVSU took home the fourth and final set 25-21.

The Lakers finished with 57 kills, a .252 kill percentage, 55 digs, and 10 blocks. Senior Ali Thompson led the Lakers with 13 kills and 14 digs, followed by junior Sarah Wight who also finished with 13 kills. Senior Abby Graham and junior Jaelinna Primus each tallied 10 kills a piece, while senior Jayla Wesley also finished with 10 kills and four blocks. Freshman libero Julia Blaney totaled 13 digs today and junior setter Rachel Jacquay dished out 42 assists to the Lakers. 

The Lakers will be back in action at Purdue Northwest on Saturday, Nov. 6.
