Grand Valley State Volleyball Sweeps Purdue Northwest

Lakers Advance to 5-1 in the GLIAC

The Grand Valley State volleyball team defeated Purdue Northwest on Sunday, Oct. 3. After winning their third conference match in a row, the Lakers extended their GLIAC record to 5-1 and overall record to 9-5. Currently, GVSU is leading the GLIAC South Division. 

The Lakers came out strong in the first set and won 25-13. In set two, the Lakers struggled to pull away from Purdue Northwest. The biggest lead that GVSU was able to obtain in the second set was only by three points, 8-5. After the Pride tied the set at 10-10, Purdue NW pulled away and took the lead 14-10. The Lakers and Pride were tied up at 23-23 and went point for point until the Lakers were able to pull out a set two victory 31-29.

After six consecutive serves from Isabella Kandes, the Lakers started set three with a 9-2 lead. It didn't take long for the Lakers to string together rallies and win the third and final set 25-13. 

The Lakers finished with 44 kills, a .324 kill percentage, 11 blocks, 52 digs, and five service aces. Fifteen Lakers saw action over three sets today. Senior Abby Graham and junior Karlie Kucharczyk led the Lakers with nine kills a piece, and 10 digs and 12 digs respectively. Junior Lisa Sullivan tallied seven kills, followed by junior Sarah Wight who totaled five kills and five blocks. Junior Jaelianna Primus also finished with five kills. Junior setter Rachel Jacquay dished out 22 assists and freshman setter Megan Crowley finished with a career high 16 assists. 

The Lakers are back on the road this weekend as they play at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 2:00 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 10, the Lakers will play at Wayne State at 2:00 p.m.
