The Grand Valley State Volleyball team defeated Northwood University on Sunday, Oct. 24, in a close four-set match. The Lakers are now on a five game winning streak and advance to 7-3 in conference play and 14-7 overall.
The Timberwolves came out strong in set one and made it difficult for the Lakers to get into a rhythm. The Lakers trailed the Timberwolves the entirety of set one and while GVSU made some runs, the Lakers fell 25-21 in the first set.
In set two, the Lakers and the Timberwolves were tied at 10-10 until Northwood took the advantage 15-11. The Lakers came back to tie up the set again at 17-17. After kills by Ali Thompson, Sarah Wight, and Julianna Primus, the Lakers won set two 25-18.
GVSU started to get into a rhythm in set three and walked away with a set three victory of 25-14. In the fourth and final set, Grand Valley State came out strong and defeated the Timberwolves in a 25-17 win.
Grand Valley State finished with 45 kills (.302 kill percentage), 58 digs, nine blocks, and seven service aces. Senior Ali Thompson led the Lakers with 12 kills (.300 kill percentage) and 11 digs, followed by junior Sarah White who finished with eight kills and a .467 kill percentage. Juniors Jaelianna Primus and Karlie Kucharczyk also tallied seven kills a piece. Senior Abby Graham finished with 12 digs, six kills, and four service aces. Freshman Julia Blaney finished with 14 digs and junior setter Rachel Jacquay dished out 36 assists.
The Lakers are back in action at home next weekend. The Lakers will play local rival Ferris State on Friday, Oct. 29 at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 30, the Lakers will play their other local rival Davenport University at 4:00 p.m.
