RECAP: No. 1 GVSU downs Michigan Tech, 5-0, Friday

Four Lakers score as GVSU pitches 10th shutout of the season

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 1 Grand Valley State Lakers flexed their muscle in a resounding win, 5-0, over the Michigan Tech Huskies Friday afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Field. Four different Lakers scored to improve the team to 13-0-1 overall and 10-0-1 in GLIAC play. GVSU is on the road this Sunday to face Davenport at 11 AM.

Caitie Baron scored twice while Taylor Reid scored and dished two assists to lead the Laker attack. Reid got the Lakers on the board first when Cecilia Steinwascher lofted a ball over the Tech defense to the right wing for Darline Radamaker, who looped a perfect cross to the back post where Reid was all alone to head the ball in.

Just before the half, the Lakers would add some breathing room. Greta DeLoach swung the ball to the top of the box for Chantel Carranza, who curled the ball along the turf just inside the right post for a 2-0 lead at the break. Baron would score twice within a two-minute span around the hour-mark to put the game away.

First, Kennedy Bearden drove through the left side of the Huskies defense then side-stepped the keeper before calmly centering the ball for Baron to tap home. Then, Reid played an excellent ball from midfield that split the Huskies back line and put Baron through on the keeper where she was able to smash a shot hard enough to trickle into the net despite a heavy deflection from the keeper.

After a Steinwascher shot drilled the post, a put-back by Makenna Schoolman was saved at the goal line by a defender but DeLoach was there to slam the rebound into the far corner netting. This marks the seventh straight game DeLoach has scored and she leads the GLIAC with 16 on the season.

GVSU, who entered the game leading the nation in assists and assists per game, utilized seven assists on the day for their five goals. Kendall Robertson saved the only shot she faced to preserve the shutout, the tenth clean sheet of the season for the Lakers.

The team next travels across town to face Davenport at 11 AM on Sunday (Oct. 24). GVSULakers.com will provide live coverage links while @GVSUSoccer will give live update on Twitter.
