UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Grand Valley State women's basketball team opened up the season with a 66-51 win over Saginaw Valley State on Friday night at O'Neill Arena. The win is the Lakers ninth straight season opening victory dating back to the 2012-13 season. The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM.
GVSU was led by junior
Emily Spitzley, scoring 17 points and grabbing nine boards, while junior
Hannah Kulas poured in 12 points, dished out seven assists, and recorded four steals. Junior
Brooke McKinley also finished in double-figures with 10 points and freshman
Rylie Bisballe scored eight points and tallied seven rebounds.
As a team, the Lakers shot 43.1% from the field and buried 13 of 18 attempts from the charity stripe, while outscoring SVSU 42-24 in the paint. GVSU's bench also provided a spark, scoring 21 points.
After a tightly contested first quarter, the Lakers gained control midway through the second quarter and took a 33-30 lead into the halftime break. GVSU came out in the second half on a mission and built a 47-34 lead with a
Ellie Droste layup at the 4:08 mark of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Lakers extended their lead to a game-high 18 points on a Bisballe layup with 7:44 remaining in the game.
