Lakers complete sweep of Wayne State

Three Lakers finished in double-figures on Sunday

DETROIT, Mich. –  The Grand Valley State women's basketball team completed the sweep of Wayne State on Sunday afternoon with a 61-49 win at the Matthaei Building. The Lakers move to 8-1 overall on the season and remain tied with Michigan Tech atop the GLIAC standings at the halfway point of the regular season.

Hannah Kulas scored a team-high 18 points, while Brooke McKinley knocked down 5 three-pointers to finish with 15 points and dished out four assists. Emily Spitzley also scored in double-figures with 13 points and Samantha Gehrls played a game-high 38 minutes and stuffed the stat sheet with six points, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. As a team, the Lakers drilled 10 three-point baskets and connected on seven out of nine attempts at the charity stripe.

This afternoon's game featured a different script compared to yesterday. After trailing much of the game on Saturday, the Lakers scored the first basket of the game and never trailed throughout the duration of the contest. GVSU went up 13-3 early and led 18-11 at the end of the first quarter. Wayne State would trim the Laker lead to 21-20 midway through the second quarter, but GVSU would answer and take a 25-20 lead into the break.

The Warriors would hang around in the third quarter and made it a two-point game with 2:21 left in the period, but the Lakers always had an answer for every Wayne State run. GVSU brought a 44-39 lead into the final frame and put the game away in the fourth quarter, going on an 8-0 run to increase their lead to 12 points late in the contest.

GVSU will finally return home to the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena next Saturday to take on Ferris State in the annual Saywers Day Game. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
