KENOSHA, Wis. – The Grand Valley State women's basketball team dropped their first contest of the season against Parkside, 68-64, on Friday evening at De Simone Gymnasium. The Lakers fall to 4-1 on the year, while Parkside improves to 2-3. Tomorrow's matchup between the two teams will tip at 4:00 PM ET.
Hannah Kulas scored a career-high 28 points in the losing effort, while
Emily Spitzley scored 22 points (career-high), grabbed eight rebounds, and blocked four shots.
Parkside jumped on the Lakers early, building a 9-4 lead, but GVSU was able to knot the game at 13-13 as the first quarter ended. The Lakers dominated the second quarter by going on a 16-2 run capped by a
Samantha Gehrls three-point basket. GVSU led 32-18 with 3:07 left in the half before Parkside answered with a 7-0 run to end the half and trimmed the Lakers lead to 32-25 going into the break.
GVSU held the lead into the second half until the 3:30 mark of the third quarter, from then on it was all Parkside. The Rangers took a 45-42 advantage into the fourth quarter and built their lead by as many as 12 points at 59-47 with 5:01 remaining in the contest. The Lakers did cut the deficit to just two points at 65-63 with just under 10 seconds remaining, however Parkside knocked down clutch free-throws to seal the win.
