ALLENDALE, Mich. ā The #3 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team hosts a pair of above .500 teams this week at the Fieldhouse Arena which includes a top-3 showdown. The Lakers will take on Wayne State on Thursday night (Feb. 6) at 6:00 PM before the #2 ranked Ashland Eagles come to town on Saturday (Feb. 8) at 1:00 PM with potential GLIAC Regular Season Title implications.

Last week, GVSU completed season sweeps of both Purdue Northwest and Parkside on the road to improve to 20-1 overall and 12-1 in GLIAC play. On Thursday in the 64-42 win over Purdue Northwest, senior center
Cassidy Boensch scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while senior guard
Jenn DeBoer recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard
Taryn Taugher tied a season-high with 19 points on Saturday as the Lakers defeated Parkside 82-49, which was the seventh straight game GVSU has held their opponent under 50 points.

The GLIAC standings feature Ashland in first place by one game over GVSU, while Ferris State and Parkside are four games back of the top spot. Seven games remain in the regular season schedule for the GLIAC and the Lakers and Eagles are fighting for the regular season crown and the right to host the conference tournament.

Wayne State, winners of four out of their last five games, will enter Thursday with a 12-9 overall and 6-7 GLIAC record. The Warriors began the conference season 2-6 before going on a four-game win streak which was just snapped last Saturday against Ferris State in overtime. Sadia Johnson (13 ppg.), Grace George (12.6 ppg.), and Natassja Chambers (11.0 ppg.) all average in double-figures for Wayne State with George nearly averaging a double-double, grabbing 9.6 rebounds per game. As a team, the Warriors rebound extremely well and get to the free throw line at a high rate, leading the conference in both categories with 42.2 rebounds per game and a total of 426 free throw attempts on the season.

GVSU leads the all-time series with Wayne State, 51-26, including a 67-41 win over the Warriors back on Jan. 11 in Detroit.

Saturday will feature the much-anticipated rematch with the #2 ranked Ashland Eagles, who knocked off GVSU 77-68 a month ago. The Lakers held a 66-65 lead with just under three minutes remaining before Ashland finished the game on a 13-2 run. GVSU was without second leading scorer,
Maddie Dailey (injury), for the first matchup but she has since returned to the starting lineup. Since the top-5 showdown in Ashland, the Eagles have showed no letup, defeating their opponents by an average of 37.9 points across the last seven games. Seniors Sara Loomis and Jodi Johnson average 17.0 points and 16.7 points per game respectively, while the other three Eagle starters average at least 10.2 points per contest. As a team, Ashland averages 91.7 points per game, shoots at a 53.2% clip from the field and boasts a 45.9% mark from behind the arc, which leads the nation.

The Lakers currently own a 26-game regular season home winning streak with the last loss coming to #1 Ashland, 96-90 in OT on Feb. 15, 2018.
