UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The No. 15 Grand Valley State Lakers coasted to a wire-to-wire win, 75-61, over Saginaw Valley State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action at O'Neill Arena Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon. GVSU remains in first place in the GLIAC with an 8-1 conference record and improve to 15-2 overall. The Lakers will return home to host Michigan Tech on Thursday (Jan. 23).
Four Lakers scored in double figures, led by a career-high 22 points from
Jeremiah Ferguson.
Jake Van Tubbergen scored 16 points and finished a rebound shy of a double-double while
Christian Negron and
Isaac Gassman each scored 15 points.
"I'm really happy with the way our team played today, on both ends of the floor," said GVSU head coach
Ric Wesley. "Defensively, we didn't let them get to the spots they wanted and really made them work for everything they got. On the offensive end we moved the ball well, Jeremiah played some of his best basketball of the season, and we hit the open shots."
GVSU sprinted out of the gate with a 14-2 barrage. Gassman knocked down a seven of the Lakers' first nine points as the Lakers quickly opened a double-digit lead. The Cardinals would get within seven points a few times, but never really threatened a comeback as GVSU answered each and every run.
GVSU finishes the first half of the conference slate as they welcome in Michigan Tech on Thursday (Jan. 23) at 8 PM and Northern Michigan on Saturday (Jan. 25) for Sawyers' Day. Both games will air on ESPN 96.1 FM and the Thursday contest is televised on ESPN3. For ticket information, visit gvsulakers.com.
