#3 GVSU bounces back in 67-41 win over Wayne State on Saturday evening

The Lakers will be back in action Thursday (Jan. 16) against Northwood

DETROIT, Mich. – The #3 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss at #4 Ashland on Thursday night by defeating Wayne State 67-41 on Saturday evening inside the Matthaei Center. The Lakers improve to 14-1 overall and 6-1 in GLIAC play, while Wayne State falls to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in league play.
 
Senior center Cassidy Boensch scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Lakers. The Au. Gres, Mich. native has now scored 25+ points for the third straight game and sixth time overall this season. Senior guard Jenn DeBoer chipped in 14 points and five rebounds with Victoria Hedemark adding 10 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
 
Despite shooting a season-low 40.7% from the field, the Lakers defense was able to step up and force Wayne State to shoot just 29.6% from the field and 29.4% from behind the arc. GVSU also capitalized on their opportunities at the charity stripe, shooting 17-22 (77.3%) on the evening. The Lakers held the advantage in many statistical categories including; rebounds (41-36), assists (16-11), points off turnovers (21-9), and points in the paint (36-18).
 
GVSU jumped out to an early 10-2 lead midway through the first quarter and led 19-10 after the first quarter with Boensch scoring 11 of her 25 points in the frame. The Lakers would grow their lead to 12 points early in the second, but the two teams would trade baskets the rest of the quarter and GVSU took a 35-26 lead into the break.
 
After an evenly played third quarter, the Lakers broke the game open in the fourth as they extended their lead to a game-high 26 points at 63-37 with 1:51 left in the contest.
 
The Lakers will return home on Thursday (Jan. 16) to host Northwood with the tip set for 6:00 P.M.
