ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 4 Grand Valley State Lakers earned their second straight win with a 6-0 defeat of Illinois-Springfield Tuesday (Sept. 24) night at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers improve to 5-1 on the season while UIS drops to 4-2 on the year.
Ava Cook set a career-high with four goals in the win while
Gianna Parlove had two assists.
Cook got the Lakers on the board early, using a combination from Parlove and
Kennedy Bearden from the right side to find a centering pass and one-time it home for the lead. In the 36'
Chantel Carranza would use a feathered through-ball from
Riko Sagara and use a clinical finish to double the advantage before half.
Cook wasted no time adding to the lead out of the locker room, using a Parlove set-up to finish inside the near post and make it a 3-0 score. A corner kick in the 50' set up GVSU's next goal, with
Makenna Schoolman serving the ball into the middle of the box where Cook could get up and head it home.
Cook would strike again in the 54' on an aerial cross from
Cecilia Steinwascher for her fourth tally. In the 78', after a shot from Sagara rang off the crossbar,
Lauren Ross collected the loose ball just outside the penalty area, worked her way through the defender and smashed a top-shelfer for her first goal of her career.
The Lakers are back at home on Friday (Sept. 27) to host Saginaw Valley State at 7:00 PM for the first Friday Nights Under the Lights match of the year. Pregame donuts, pizza and scarf giveaways precede the Battle of the Valleys, which will be capped off with a post-game fireworks show. For tickets or more information, visit GVSULakers.com.
