#5 GVSU takes down #1 LIU Post in College World Series elimination game

The Lakers will face West Florida tomorrow morning

The #5 seed Grand Valley State Lakers had a great bounce back win at the 2019 NCAA Division II College Softball World Series when they defeated #1 seed LIU Post, 2-0, on a sunny afternoon in Denver, Colo. GVSU will now face West Florida in another elimination game tomorrow morning (May 25) at 11:00 AM MDT (1:00 PM EDT). GVSU now reaches the 50-win plateau for just the second time in program history as they improve to 50-9 this season.

The Lakers have freshman Lydia Goble to thank for their two runs this afternoon. The Schoolcraft, Mich. native and NFCA Freshman of the Year Finalist roped a line drive two-run homer over the field in left fence in what would turn out to be the game-winning swing. She finished the day with two of the Lakers 10 total hits as Kaylie Rhynard and Shannon Flaherty both finished with a pair of hits as well. Sophomore Nikoma Holmen, junior Kelcie LaTour, freshman Morgan Wagner, and sophomore Bailey Thatcher all added hits of their own as well.

The slim two-run lead the Lakers held all game was more than enough for senior righty Allison Lipovsky as she improved to 32-3 on the season. She tossed a complete game two-hitter, striking out 12 Pioneers while issuing zero walks.

Much like they did yesterday, the Lakers got on the board in the top of the first inning. Today, it was Goble who pushed the first runs across as she hit a line drive just over the top of the fence in left field for her team-leading 13th homer of the season. The bomb also scored Rhynard who reached on a leadoff bunt single.

The Lakers would load the bases in each of the next two innings but fail to push anything across while Lipovsky was once again off to a dominant start. She put the Pioneers down in order in the first and second innings before allowing her first hit, a single through the right side, in the third.

GVSU's offense continued to rack up the hits but couldn't get them when they needed as they tallied eight hits through the first six innings but only got on the scoreboard with Gobles homer back in the first.

Lipovsky picked up her 10th and 11th strikeouts of the game for the first two outs of the bottom of the sixth inning before adding one more in the seventh while a final fly out to Henning in right field secured the victory.

Again, GVSU will face West Florida in yet another elimination game at 11:00 AM MDT (1:00 PM EDT).
