Lakers fall to Texas A&M-Kingsville in College World Series, finish season 51-10

It was the second winningest season in program history

The Grand Valley State softball team fell to Texas A&M-Kingsville as one of the final four teams still playing, 3-2, and finish their 2019 campaign with an overall record of 51-10. The Lakers 51 victories this season is the second most in program history while the College World Series appearance was just the fourth since the program's inception.

GVSU took home numerous honors this season, both individually and as a team. Nine different Lakers were honored on the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Teams, four were named D2CCA All-Midwest Region Players, three to the NFCA All-Region Team, and two to the NFCA All-American teams. As a team, the Lakers defended their GLIAC Regular Season and Tournament Titles, were crowned NCAA Midwest Region 1 Champions, NCAA Midwest Super Regional Champions, and made that fourth appearance in the College World Series in program history.

Two-time First Team All-American and three-time GLIAC Pitcher of the Year Allison Lipovsky tossed a complete game seven-hitter, allowing three runs while striking out nine Javelinas in her final start in a Laker uniform. She finishes the season with a program record 33 wins to just four losses while holding numerous career and single-season records.

The Laker offense managed four hits and two runs on the afternoon as Lydia Goble launched her team-best 15th homer of the season and Morgan Wagner delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to just one. Senior Kaylie Rhynard and junior Kelcie LaTour tallied the Lakers other two hits.

Seniors Shannon Flaherty and Rachel Terwilliger also played in their final game as a member of the Grand Valley State squad and were integral parts of this fantastic postseason run.

Playing as the home team, the Lakers were in the field to start things off while the Javelinas took to the box first. A walk and one-out single put runners on first and second before a near home run plated the first run of the game as the Javelinas took the 1-0 lead. GVSU couldn't get out of it however, as West Texas scored two more runs with soft hit singles towards shortstop to go up 3-0 after the first half inning.

Rhynard got the Lakers started with a leadoff bunt single but would be doubled up when Rieger hit a laser right at the first baseman covering the base for the easy two outs. Goble kept the energy up however as she launched her 15th homer of the season to cut the deficit to two, 3-1.

From there, both pitchers found a nice groove as they allowed just two hits combined over the next three innings.

The Lakers got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth inning but couldn't capitalize while the same happened for the Javelinas in the top of the sixth. GVSU couldn't push anything across in the sixth while the Lipovsky held the Javelinas scoreless in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the frame, the Lakers once again kept it exciting, scoring a run off the bat of Wagner to cut the deficit to one, 3-2. A final groundout would put an end to a stellar season however as the Lakers would fall by that score and end their season with a 51-10 overall mark, the second most wins in program history.
