GVSU downs Hillsdale, 4-0, advances to Midwest Region II Championship Match

The No. 3 seeded Grand Valley State women's tennis team captured a 4-0 win over the No. 6 seed Hillsdale (16-3) in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region 2 semifinals Monday, May 13, in Detroit, Mich. With the win the Lakers improve to 22-4 on the season and will now face No. 2 Wayne State in the championship match on Tuesday, May 14, at 1 p.m. 
 
The Lakers scored the match's first point after they took the doubles points with wins from the No. 1 and No. 2 pairings. Marija Leko and Madison Ballard claimed a 6-4 victory from No. 1 doubles, while Marily Canellopoulos and Vera Griva tallied 6-1 win from No. 2 doubles. Hillsdale did win from the No. 3 spot, after Livia Christman and Nicole Heiniger fell 6-4.
 
The Lakers continued their strong play into singles with three straight wins. Leko played out of the No. 3 spot and won 6-3, 6-2, while Caneelpoulos captured a 6-3, 6-3, win from No. 4 singles. GVSU's final point came from Heiniger, as she captured the match point with a 7-5, 6-2 win.
 
Grand Valley State's will face Wayne State in the Midwest Region 2 finals on Tuesday, May 14, at 1 p.m. This will also be the third time this season that GVSU will face WSU; The Lakers were previously defeated by Wayne State both times.
