CALEDONIA, Mich. – The No. 22 Grand Valley State Lakers outlasted cross-town foe Davenport with a 17-9 win in the final road game of the 2019 regular season for GVSU on Saturday (April 6). The Lakers improve to 9-3 on the season and are now 6-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.
Carly Shisler led the Laker attack with six goals while
Sarah Stagaard added four and
Sophie Conroy notched three. Reigning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week,
Kelley Fitzgerald, notched seven assists and scored once.
Payton Neil made seven saves for GVSU.
Grand Valley State jumped out to a fast start, scoring four of the first five goals of the day. A varied attack saw four different Lakers score in the opening ten minutes as the Lakers built their lead. Davenport would hang around for much of the first half, staying within three all the way to halftime, where the Lakers would lead 8-5.
Shisler, who had three goals at intermission, opened the scoring in the second half as well and began the charge of a 9-4 second half as the Lakers pulled away with the win. GVSU plays each of their final four games of the regular season on their home field, beginning Friday (April 12) at 6:00 PM against Northern Michigan in the second-annual M.S. game.
