No. 22 GVSU wins big on MS Awareness night

Lakers down Northern Michigan, 21-3, Friday night for fourth straight win

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 22 Grand Valley State Lakers led wire-to-wire in a 21-3 win over the Northern Michigan Wildcats Friday (April 12) night during the second annual Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Game at the GVSU Lacrosse Stadium. The Lakers improve to 10-3 on the season and 7-1 in GLIAC play with their fourth straight win.

Twelve different Lakers scored in the win. Carly Shisler led the scoring with five goals to go along with five draw controls and a trio of ground balls. Sarah Stagaard contributed a hat-trick of her own while Annie Yost, Skyler Simmers and Abbi O'Neal all scored twice. Kelley Fitzgerald dished six assists while Payton Neil stopped three of four shots against her in the first half.

Shisler scored just over two minutes into the action and thirty seconds later O'Neal, who is the catalyst for the MS Awareness cause, scored to double the lead. Northern Michigan would get on the board four minutes later (2-1), but that would be their final tally of the first half. The Lakers would rattle off 12 straight goals to end the period and carry a 14-1 lead into the break.

The Lakers continued their dominance in the second half as a running clock ticked the entire period. The Lakers held a 26-12 edge in ground balls, 18-8 advantage in draw controls and out-shot NMU 33-7. The four-game winning streak is the longest of the season for GVSU. The Lakers look to continue their winning ways next Thursday (April 18) when they host Lewis at 7:00 PM.
