No. 7 Lakers fall in GLIAC Tournament Semifinal to Northern Michigan, 47-38

GVSU now awaits the NCAA selection show on Sunday to see if their season will continue

The No. 7 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team fell to Northern Michigan, 47-38, in the semifinal round of the GLIAC Tournament. The Lakers now await the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, March 10 at 10:00 PM to find out if their season will continue. Despite the loss, the odds are in the Lakers favor as they have turned in a terrific season with a 27-3 record and 19-1 record against conference opponents and were ranked No. 3 in the last regional poll. The Wildcats improve to 2-1 against GVSU this season and are 22-8 overall and 15-5 heading into the GLIAC Championship.

It was a tough shooting day for all of the Lakers, as they combined to hit just 32.0% (16-50) of their shots, including just 4-22 (18.2%) from deep. While the Wildcats weren't very efficient either, they did connect on 38.5% (17-44) of their buckets while going 6-20 (30.0%) from beyond the arc.

NMU won the turnover battle, as the Lakers coughed the ball up 13 times which the Wildcats converted into 12 points of offense. On the other side, NMU had 10 turnovers which resulted in seven points for the Lakers. The Lakers did outrebound the Wildcats 33-28 and outscored them 22-16 down low.

Junior center Cassidy Boensch recorded her 21st double double of the season with an 18-point, 10 rebound performance while freshman Brooke McKinley was second on the team with six points after going 2-2 from deep.

While the Laker offense couldn't get much going on the offensive end, their defense was spectacular in the first quarter, as they held the Wildcats scoreless for the first 10 minutes. It was the second time this season GVSU has held an opponent scoreless in a quarter, also doing so against Lourdes earlier this season. Boensch got things going with a layup and followed it up with an and-1 jumper to put the Lakers up five. Two more layups from Boensch sandwiched a Hedemark lay in as the Lakers were up 11-0 after one.

Despite the big deficit, the Wildcats quickly chipped away at the lead as their shots started to fall. A 9-0 run by NMU cut the lead to just two, 11-9 before a quick seven-point swing from GVSU would put them back up seven, 20-13. A last second layup from NMU would put the halftime score at 20-15 in favor of the Lakers.

Five points from the Wildcats to start the third tied things up at 20 before back to back layups would fall for GVSU. The teams would go bucket for bucket for the entirety of the third quarter before threes from Dailey and Koenig would fall but another last second layup from NMU would go to cut the lead to two, 34-32.

While the Lakers couldn't find much offense to begin with, anything they had disappeared in the fourth quarter. Back to back threes from NMU would put them up six, 40-34, which they would maintain until the 3:09 mark when Boensch put another layup in to cut the lead to two, 40-38. That would be the final bucket for the Lakers however as NMU would close out the game with a 7-0 run.

Again, the Lakers await the NCAA Selection to find out if their season will continue.
