DENVER – The No. 15 Grand Valley State Lakers held a lead for much of the match but couldn't hold off No. 9 Regis in a 15-12 loss Friday evening. The Lakers had to deal with a change of start time and venue due to field conditions at Regis. GVSU returns from their spring trip sporting a 3-2 record on the season.
A back-and-forth first half saw the Lakers regain the lead time and time again.
Sophie Conroy and
Abbi O'Neal scored within the first three minutes of play, but Regis would answer with a pair of their own. From there, the Lakers would regain the lead three more times in the period only to see the Rangers match them.
Carly Shisler,
Sarah Stagaard each scored with Regis answering before
Kelley Fitzgerald scored to put the Lakers ahead (5-4) and O'Neal followed up with a pair more. Regis would get one back before the half but GVSU took a 7-5 lead into intermission.
Olivia Esposito would score in the opening minute of the second half, but Regis rallied for three quick goals to tie things up (8-8) with 25 minutes to go. The match would be tied once more at 9-9 before Regis pulled away late.
The Lakers are back in action next Friday (March 15) when they begin GLIAC play on the road against Concordia-St. Paul. GVSULakers.com will provide links to live coverage while @GVSUWLAX will provide live updates on Twitter.
