GVSU Completes Sweep Over Sioux Falls, 10-3 And 8-3

Grand Valley State (6-6) picked up a doubleheader sweep over Sioux Falls Friday (Mar. 8) afternoon at the Russ Matt Invitational in Kissimmee, Fla., winning game one 10-3 and the nightcap 8-3. GVSU improves to 6-6 on the year and will face defending NCAA DII National Champion Augustana Saturday at 1 p.m. in a single 9-inning contest. 
 
The Lakers opened with four runs on five hits in top of the opening frame to get the say started. SS Parker Murdie and RF Jacob Gleason singled, followed by a single to center off the bat of C Joe Laudont that plated Murdie. 1B Ryan Blake-Jones delivered a two-out double to right center to score Laudont and Gleason, followed by an RBI  single by DH Nathan Bonter.  CF Chase Carpenter hit a solo HR to right in the top of the third to up the Laker lead to 5-0. Gleason drove in a pair with a triple to left in the top of the fourth and 3B Anthony Cocco doubled to left to plate Gleason and give GVSU an 8-0 advantage. Sioux Falls scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lakers pushed two across in the top of the sixth. Murdie tripled to center and scored on a Gleason sac fly, followed by a Cocco solo HR to right. 
 
Freshman RHP Rylan Peets upped his record to 2-0, yielding one run on five hits with seven strikeouts.  Sam Leck pitched two scoreless innings, striking out two. Gleason was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Cocco collected two hits and drove in a pair. Blake-Jones tallied two RBI, while Murdie was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. 
 
 
Game two
 The Lakers fell behind the Cougars 3-0 as USF scored two in the top of the second and one in the top of the third, however, the GVSU offense opened up with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits. LF Chase Carpenter tripled to open the inning and Ryan Blake-Jones plated  Carpenter with a one-out groundout. DH Zach Berry and C Ryan Lorber walked, while CF Drakes Ellens reached on an error that scored Lorber. 2B Alex Mandeville singled home two runs, followed by a Parker Murdie run scoring single. RF Jacob Gleason doubled home two runs, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a balk to conclude the Laker scoring for the inning.  GVSU added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Ellens singled, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Mandeville and scored on a Gleason double. 
 
Gleason went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles, while Mandeville plated two runs in a 1-for-2 outing and Murdie was 2-for-4 with and RBI. Keaghan Sutliff picked up the win, striking out three in 1.1 innings of work. Brett Nearing struck out three in 1.1 innings of work and Brendan Nearing recorded the final two outs.
