The Grand Valley State track and field teams are back home this weekend and are set to host the GVSU Big Meet-Friday, on Friday (Feb. 8) and the GVSU Big Meet-Saturday, on Saturday (Feb. 9); as this year the GVSU Big Meet will be split into two separate meets. Live coverage of the meet will also be on provided by FloSports and streamed live on Flotrack.org on both days.
The GVSU Big Meets will be the largest meets that GVSU has hosted thus far this season and will include several Division I programs and over 1,2000 athletes. Friday's meet will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the men's and women's 5,000 meter run as the first events, while the rest of the track events begin at 12:45 p.m. The field events will commence at 12:00 p.m. Saturday's meet starts at 9:00 a.m. with field events, followed by the track events at 10:00 a.m.
Entering the weekend, both Laker squads are ranked in the top-five in the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association index poll, as the women hold the No. 1 ranking with 201.75 points, while the men are currently No. 4 with 95.49 points. Additionally, GVSU has a combine 45 top-25 marks nationally, as the women have 28 top-25 marks and the men have 17.
During the last week's meets, Grand Valley State saw a combined 19 NCAA provisional times and standards and one automatic time at the Hillsdale "Wide-Track" Classic and the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational. The Lakers also had
Rachael Walters and
Elli Kimes sweep the GLIAC's Women Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors, while
Jacob Battani earned the GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week title.
On the women's side,
Tiara Wiggins (60m hurdles)
Angelica Floyd (60m dash) and the 4x400m relay team of
Jessica Eby Sarah Beulla, Walters and
Heather Johnson all hit provisional times, while Walters ran an automatic time of 2:06.93 in the 800m run. In the field events,
Anna Obi hit a provisional mark in the triple jump while six pole vaulters were able to earn provisional marks that included
Elli Kimes,
Kassidie Stimmel,
Jessica Bray,
Lucy Buckholz,
Carly Livingston and
Avery Shell.
The GVSU men also had several individuals hit provisional during last week's meet with
Jordan Johnson (60m dash),
Dennis Mbuta (Mile),
Zach Panning (Mile),
Nick Salomon (800m run) and the 4x400m relay team composed of
Daniel Walker,
Thomas Capers,
Alexander Porter and
Andrew McFarland.
Jacob Battani also hit a provisional mark in the pole vault as well.
