DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The #3 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team dominated from start to finish in an 82-32 victory over Ave Maria, the largest scoring margin of the season, on Friday afternoon from the Ocean Center. The Lakers improve to 10-0 on the season, the best start to a season since 2002-03.
Senior center
Cassidy Boensch recorded her fifth straight double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while
Jenn DeBoer and
Emily Spitzley each finished in double figures with 14 points and 10 points respectively. Senior forward
Maddie Dailey added eight points and 11 rebounds. The Lakers shot 53% (35-66) from the field and held Ave Maria to an 18.6% (11-59) clip including 11.8% (2-17) from three-point range. GVSU's defense also held the Gyrenes without an assist, four points off turnovers and only six second chance points.
The Lakers began the game on a 9-0 run and held Ave Maria without a basket until the 3:20 mark of the first quarter. The Gyrenes would battle back to make it 13-8 and GVSU would lead 17-11 after the one quarter of play. In the second quarter, the Lakers broke the game open as they outscored Ave Maria 21-6 and took a 38-17 lead into the halftime break.
GVSU continued to grow their lead in the second half, outscoring the Gyrenes 24-7 in the third quarter and led by as many as 52 points late in the fourth quarter.
The Lakers will take on Stonehill College on Sunday (Dec. 22) at noon inside the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach.
