ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 3 Grand Valley State Lakers won big on the road Saturday (Nov. 9) with a 94-50 win over the Maryville Saints to improve to 2-0 to start the season with a pair of regional wins. The Lakers will return home next Sunday (Nov. 17) to host the Lewis Flyers for their home-opener.
Cassidy Boensch scored 19 points on 9-11 shooting and blocked seven shots while
Maddie Dailey scored 17 points on a slightly less efficient 7-11 from the field.
Victoria Hedemark,
Brooke McKinley and
Haley Swing all had nine points.
A dominating first quarter set the tone for the afternoon as the Lakers jumped out to a 36-13 lead. GVSU went 14-19 from the field, 4-4 from three, while holding the Saints to just 4-15 from the field to break away early. GVSU scored the first 13 points of the game over the first four minutes, forcing a timeout by Maryville. The Saints got a bucket out of the timeout, but the Lakers would answer with two more before Maryville scored again.
A 21-9 second quarter continued to build the separation and allow the Lakers to go deep in their bench in the second half, getting some younger players valuable reps and allow the starters to get a well-deserved break. The Lakers made at least seven buckets in each quarter as the offense continued to impress no matter the lineup.
The Lakers begin their home season next Sunday. The game will air on Talk 1230 WTKG with live video stream on the Grand Valley Sports Network. GVSULakers.com will provide links to all live coverage and live stats while @GVSUWBB live-Tweets the action.
