PREVIEW: #3 Lakers travel to Central State for Wednesday afternoon matchup

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The #3 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball will travel to Central State to take on the Marauders in a one-game road trip before beginning GLIAC play next Thursday (Dec. 5) at home against Parkside. The Lakers enter Wednesday with a 5-0 record, while Central State sits at 2-4 on the season.

GVSU defeated a pair of GMAC schools in Hillsdale and Findlay this past weekend in convincing fashion. The Lakers held Hillsdale to 17% shooting from the field in a 74-25 victory on Friday and followed that up with an 88-63 win over Findlay on Sunday afternoon. Senior center Cassidy Boensch totaled 37 points, 14 rebounds, seven blocks, and four steals across the two games, while senior forward Maddie Dailey combined for 35 points, 14 rebounds, and six steals. Boensch and Dailey are currently averaging 17.0 points per game and 15.6 points per game respectively, the only Lakers averaging double-figures. GVSU's balanced scoring attack features six players averaging at least six points per game including; Jenn DeBoer (9.6), Taryn Taugher (7.4), Haley Swing (7.4), and Victoria Hedemark (6.6) to go along with Boensch and Dailey.

The Lakers remained #3 in the WBCA Top-25 poll which is announced every Tuesday. GVSU also ranks amongst the top-10 in the country in several team/individually statistical categories.

Central State has dropped their last two games including their most recent to a common opponent in Lewis, by a score of 73-56. The Marauders also played fellow GLIAC member, Wayne State back on Nov. 13 and dropped the contest, 78-70. Central State head coach LaTonya McDole was promoted to head coach in February of 2018 after spending nine seasons as an assistant coach. McDole was a four-year player at the University of Kentucky and became the third Wildcat to ever record 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, and 200 steals. The Marauders finished the 2018 season 6-2 under McDole's direction and in her first full season as head coach, Central State finished 12-17.

Central State has three players averaging in double-figures with Brooke Spaulding (16.0 ppg) leading the way. The Marauders shoot 39.3% from the field and 32.2% from three-point range, while they struggle mightily at the free-throw line with a 57% clip.
