ALLENDALE, Mich. – The #3 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team defeated the University of Findlay 88-63 on Sunday afternoon inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers push their record to 5-0 on the season, while the Oilers drop to 3-4 overall.
Senior center
Cassidy Boensch led the Lakers with 24 points (9-13 FG), seven blocks, and six rebounds with senior forward
Maddie Dailey chipping in 23 points (11-15 FG) and seven rebounds. Senior guard
Jenn DeBoer scored 15 points on 3-7 shooting from behind the arc while adding six rebounds and six assists. As a team, the Lakers dished out 27 assists, grabbed 38 rebounds, blocked 12 shots, and recorded seven steals.
The two teams traded baskets much of the first quarter before Findlay went ahead 12-9 on a three-point basket with 2:52 remaining in the frame. Dailey would answer the three-pointer a minutes later to tie the game and Boensch hit a layup late in the quarter to give the Lakers a 14-12 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. The second quarter remained close as GVSU led 26-24 with 5:05 left in the half, however the Lakers went on a 11-2 run to end the half and went into the locker room up 37-26.
GVSU came out of the halftime break strong as they increased their lead to 56-34 with 3:24 left in the quarter. DeBoer buried a pair of threes and senior guard
Jenai LaPorte knocked down a shot from behind the arc to cap a 13-3 Laker run. GVSU would lead 67-41 at the end of the third quarter. A DeBoer layup to start the fourth quarter would give the Lakers their biggest lead of the day at 69-41 and GVSU would cruise to the 25-point victory.
The Lakers will travel to Wilberforce, Ohio to take on Central State on Wednesday at 3:30 PM ET.
