ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team defeated Davis and Elkins 84-68 in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse. The Lakers improve to 2-0 overall after the win.
Junior
Jake Van Tubbergen led GVSU with 20 points and seven rebounds, while junior Issac Gassman chipped in 15 points and junior
Christian Negron added a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Senior
Jeremiah Ferguson also finished in double-figures with 12 points.
After the Lakers jumped out to an early 15-10 lead, the Senators went on a 12-2 run to take a 23-17 lead. GVSU answered with an 8-0 run as
John Slater and
Ben Lubitz each knocked down three-pointers to give the Lakers a 25-23 lead. The two teams traded baskets for the next three minutes of play until Gassman and Lubitz hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to stretch the GVSU lead to 39-30. The Lakers went into the half up 45-33.
The Senators would cut the deficit to nine points at 55-46 with 13:09 remaining, but that would be as close as they would get. GVSU would maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the half and go up by as much as 21 points with 4:28 remaining.
As a team, the Lakers shot 47.5% (28-59) from the field and 36.0% (9-25) from behind the arc, while shooting 86.4% (19-22) from the charity stripe. GVSU also outrebounded Davis and Elkins 37-25
The Lakers will be back in action on Thursday (Nov. 14) at home against Truman State at 6:00 PM.
