MIDLAND, Mich. – The No. 2 Grand Valley State women's tennis team defeated the No. 7 seed Ashland Eagles in the first round of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championship match play on Friday (Oct. 25), 4-0. The Lakers hold two wins against Ashland this season.
The Lakers swept singles match play with wins coming from No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 competitors.
Marija Leko took down her opponent, 6-1, 6-0, with
Taylor Barrett (7-5, 6-4) and
Liv Hanover (6-0, 6-0) rounding out the Lakers' singles play scoring.
In doubles play,
Vera Griva and
Marily Canellopoulos won No. 1 doubles for the 10
th time this season, winning 6-1. Leko and Barrett combined for their ninth doubles match win of the season in the No. 2 spot, while Hanover and
Agata Szewczuk were defeated in No. 3 doubles, 7-5.
No. 2 seeded Lakers take on No. 3 seed Michigan Tech at 3:45 p.m. at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
