The Grand Valley State women's tennis team defeated Ashland, 6-1, for their final match of the regular season. The Lakers finish the fall with a record of eight wins and one loss, good for second place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings.
Vera Griva once again led the Lakers from the No. 1 singles spot, 6-2, 6-0.
Marija Leko (6-2, 6-4),
Taylor Barrett (6-1, 6-0) and
Marily Canellopoulos (6-4, 6-2) all posted wins in No. 2 through 4 singles play.
Liv Hanover shut down her opponent, 6-4, 6-3 in No. 5 singles action while
Agata Szewczuk was defeated in the No. 6 singles spot, 3-6, 1-6.
GVSU swept the Eagles in doubles play, giving the Lakers their seventh sweep in doubles matches. Griva and Canellopoulos (7-5) took down their opponents in No. 1 doubles play followed by a win from Barrett and Leko, 6-2, in the No. 2 doubles spot. Szewczuk and Hanover rounded out the Laker scoring with a strong win in No. 3 doubles play, 6-1.
The Lakers travel to Midland, Mich. on Friday, Oct. 26 to compete in the GLIAC championships for their final match of the fall season.
