DETROIT, Mich. – The Grand Valley State women's tennis team lost to Wayne State, 2-5, on Saturday (Oct. 19). The Lakers were given their first loss of the season, altering their overall record to seven wins and one loss.
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Athlete of the Week,
Vera Griva, led the Lakers from the No. 1 singles spot with a win over her opponent, 6-3, 6-0.
Taylor Barrett (6-3, 6-4) also posted a GVSU win in No. 3 singles action.
Marija Leko (1-6, 2-6) and
Marily Canellopoulos (2-6, 6-4, 5-10) dropped their sets from singles spots No. 2 and No. 4, respectively.
Liv Hanover lost in No. 5 singles, 3-6, 0-6, while
Agata Szewczuk was defeated in No. 6 singles action, 2-6, 0-6.
The Lakers were swept in doubles play for the first time this season. Griva and Canellopoulos (6-7) were defeated in No. 1 doubles action, followed by a No. 2 doubles loss from Leko and Barrett, 2-6. Hanover and Szewczuk (0-6) teamed up in No. 3 doubles.
GVSU wraps up the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Ashland. The GLIAC championships will be held in Midland, Mich. on Oct. 25 to complete the fall season.
