The Grand Valley State Athletic Department is excited to announce the "Memorable Moments" series, where 15 accomplishments from the 2017-18 athletic year will be showcased. Over the next few weeks, stories will be released every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on GVSULakers.com and on the GVSU Athletics official Twitter page (@GVSULakers) that will highlight the best moments from Grand Valley State teams, as well as individual coaches and athletes, during the 2017-18 campaign.
The Grand Valley State men's swimming and diving team captured their fourth straight GLIAC Championship Title last winter after scoring 968.5 points at the conference meet, outpacing second place Northern Michigan (854.0) by over 100 points. GVSU started its run back in 2015 when they won in dominating fashion, scoring 1,098.0 points while second place Wayne State scored 870.0. The 2015 title was the first for the Lakers since the 2010 season and broke Wayne State's four-year streak.
The Lakers had some standout performances at the four-day meet, highlighted by 9 individual first place finishes across six different events. GVSU swept the diving portion of the meet, as Joe Gucwa was named the Men's Diver of the Year after taking home top honors in the 3-meter while Jared Gregory finished first in the 1-meter. Marius Mikalauskas also had an impressive individual performance, as he was named champion in the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke events. The Lakers also took home the crown in the 200 and 400-meter freestyle relays. The team of Jack Bruce, Ben Walling, Liam Little, and J.D. Ham won the 200 while Harry Shalamon, Ham, Little, and Walling won the 400.
In all, GVSU took home 35 individual All-GLIAC honors across 15 different events. Additionally, Moritz Bartels was named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year, becoming just the third Laker to win the award in program history and the first since 2012.
