Lakers Fall 13-9 In GLIAC Baseball Action At Wayne State

The Grand Valley State baseball team dropped a 13-9 GLIAC road tilt at Wayne State Friday afternoon. GVSU falls to 26-19 overall and 14-11 in GLIAC action, while Wayne State improves to 25-18 and 13-11. The Lakers and Warriors will meet Saturday (May 4) in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

Grand Valley State trailed 5-0 after giving up a run in the first, two in the second and two more in the fourth. The Lakers got on the board in the top of the fifth when senior C Austin LaDoux hit a leadoff solo HR to right. However, the Warriors answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame to pull ahead 6-1. GVSU answered with two in the top of the sixth when CF Nolan Anspaugh singled to center and LF Zach Berry hit a 2-run homer to right  to pull the Lakers within three (6-3).

Wayne State scored one in the bottom of the sixth, but GVSU put up three runs on two hits in the top of the seventh to pull within one (7-6).  2B Josh Smith hit a solo HR to right to lead off the inning, followed by PH Nate Chase reaching on catchers interference and 3B Ricky Clark reaching on an error. SS Alex Mandeville moved both runners up with a sac bunt and Berry singled with two outs to plate the pair. Wayne State pushed across three runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to pull ahead 13-6.

Caleb Anspaugh hit a solo HR to right and RF Jacob Gleason hit a 2-run HR to right to close out the scoring for the Lakers.

Senior RHP Ryan Arnold took the loss on the hill for the Lakers, yielding seven runs on nine hits. Berry was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, while Gleason drove in a pair.
