Grand Valley State claimed a 5-0 NCAA D2 Midwest Region 1 victory Saturday afternoon over Indianapolis at the GVSU Softball Field and will now face Hillsdale in another elimination game Saturday (May 12) afternoon. GVSU improves to 42-8, while UIndy ends its season with a 39-19 mark.
It was a pitchers dual through the first five innings of action as GVSU hurler
Allison Lipovsky held Indianapolis without a hit through the first five innings. GVSU was unable to come up with any runs despite receiving four walks, a hit by pitch and a single through the first four innings. The Lakers were able to push across two runs in the top of the fifth without a hit. 3B
Teagan Shomin was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an attempted sac bunt that turned into a fielder's choice by
Kaylie Rhynard. 2B
Taylor Rieger moved up the runners with a sac bunt and Shomin scored on another fielder's choice sac bunt from Nikoma Holman.
Kelcie LaTour reached on an error that scored Rhynard to give GVSU a 2-0 lead.
GVSU broke the game open with three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth. C
Jessica Ramos singled and Shomin walked with one out. Rhynard delivered a single that scored one run and pinch hitter
Kaitlyn Plocinski came through with a 2-run single to give GVSU a 5-0 lead.
Lipovsky (21-4) was sensational, allowing just a sixth inning single with 15 strikeouts. Allison has yielded just one run in her last 25 innings of work.
