GVSU Sweeps GLIAC Leading Northwood In Saturday Doubleheader

Sunday's doubleheader set for 1 p.m. at Northwood

Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader with league-leading Northwood Saturday, claiming a 7-3 win in game one, followed by a 4-3 nightcap victory. GVSU is now 23-15 overall and 11-7 in GLIAC action, while Northwood falls to 26-11 overall and 13-5 in league action. Sunday's twinbill is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Game 1
The Lakers wasted little time jumping on Northwood All-American pitcher Tyle Jandron, pushing four, first-inning runs across on three hits. Freshman CF Nolan Anspaugh singled to center on the first pitch of the game, moved to second on a sac bunt from LF Zach Berry and RF Jacob Gleason then hit a 2-run home run to left to give GVSU a 2-0 lead three pitches into the game. 1B Ryan Blake-Jones and C Austin LaDoux both walked and then advanced a base a single to left off the bat of 2B Josh Smith. Blake-Jones scored on a wild pitch and DH Connor Glick was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. Freshman 3B Ricky Clark plated LaDoux with a sac fly to center to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead.

Northwood scored three in the bottom of the third, but the Lakers picked up a pair of runs on two hits and a Northwood error in the top of the fifth. Blake-Jones reached on a fielding error, LaDoux singled and Josh Smith moved them up with sac bunt. Glick then singled to drive in a pair and a single run in the sixth on two hits gave GVSU a 7-3 lead. N. Anspaugh doubled and advanced to third on a sac bunt off the bat of Berry. Gleason singled sharply to center the plate the Lakers' final run.

Senior RHP Ryan Arnold picked up the complete-game victory, allowing three runs, none of which were earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Jandron, who came into the game with a 0.99 ERA, was tagged with the loss and allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on five hits. Gleason was 2-4 with three RBI, while Glick was 2-3 with two RBI.

Game 2
GVSU put a run on the board in the top of the first when Gleason and Blake-Jones each singled with two outs, followed by a LaDoux single that scored Gleason. However, Northwood answered with a single run in the bottom of the first on one hit and a GVSU error, but left the bases loaded. The Lakers scored two runs on three hits and a NU error in the top of the third. Berry and Blake-Jones singled and LaDoux doubled to right to plate a pair. Northwood tied it in the fifth, but the Lakers pushed across the game-winner in the top of the eighth. Blake-Jones walked and advanced to third on an error, then scored on another error when Glick put down a sac bunt.

Alex Licata picked up the win in relief, allowing one hit in three innings of work. Kyle Lawson recorded his eighth save of the season with five strikeouts and two hitless innings of work. LaDoux was 2-4 with three RBI, while Blake-Jones was 2-3 with two runs scored.
