Lakers take two from Tiffin Friday

GVSU wins three of four against Dragons for the weekend

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State Lakers swept the Tiffin Dragons in a doubleheader of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action Friday afternoon at the GVSU Baseball Field. Grand Valley State won game one, 7-1, and game two, 9-0, for a pair of convincing victories. The Lakers took three of the four games in the series and improve to 16-11 on the year and 5-3 in the league while Tiffin drops to 9-13 on the year and 3-5 in conference play.

The Lakers took game one behind a strong start from Blake Dahlstrom, who finished one out shy of a complete game. The righty allowed one run on one hit and six walks while striking out three Dragons to earn his second win of the season (2-3).  Brady Ward suffered his first loss of the season for the Dragons (3-1).

The Lakers grabbed the lead in the second inning when Christian Faust drove a sacrifice fly to left to plate Josh C. Smith after he doubled earlier in the inning. GVSU would tack on another run in the third on a Ryan Blake-Jones RBI single then again in the fourth when Nolan Anspaugh stole second and scored on two throwing errors. The Lakers would break things open in the sixth with four runs on just one hit to pull away late.

Tate Brawley hurled seven scoreless innings in game two, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out six, to earn the win (6-4). Jake Monnin took the loss for the Dragons. GVSU pounded out 10 hits and held the Dragons to three for the contest. Blake-Jones went 4-for-4 in the game, including a two-run jack in the eigth, with four RBI in the game to lead the Laker attack.

The Lakers jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring three runs in the first. Zach Berry laced a single up the middle to drive home Nolan Anspaugh and open the scoring before scoring himself on a wild pitch. Ryan Blake-Jones would then double to straightaway center field to chase home Jacob Gleason to round out the inning. Gleason would add to the lead in the fourth, his fifth jack of the season.

GVSU is back in action on Tuesday (April 3) on the road at Hillsdale at 3:00 PM. GVSULakers.com and the GVSU Baseball Twitter account will have live updates throughout the game.
