Game One (W, 8-2)
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in game one after Lipovsky surrendered a one-out two-run homer after hitting the second batter of the game to give SVSU the quick 2-0 lead. Lipovsky ended the inning with two strikeouts.
Â
GVSU got one back in the bottom of the frame however, as Shomin belted a 1-0 pitch to straightaway centerfield for her third homerun of the season and cut the Cardinal lead in half, 2-1.
Â
In the top of the second, Lipovsky sat the Cardinals down in order with three straight strikeouts to put GVSU back up to the plate. LaTour led off the bottom half of the inning with a single before a pinch-running
Kayla Plastiak swiped second with one out. Flaherty then delivered a triple down the right field line that easily scored Plastiak and tied the game, 2-2. With one out and a runner of third, Ramos grounded out to the shortstop but Flaherty managed to cross home plate as GVSU took a 3-2 lead.
Â
Both teams were quiet in the third and fourth innings before GVSU broke through once again in the bottom of the fifth. Shomin delivered a one-out double down the left field line and advanced to third on a Rhynard groundout. With two outs, Holmen singled to left center to score Shomin and move Rieger up to second as she drew a walk one batter earlier. LaTour slapped a single to right field that scored Rieger before Henning once again singled to right to score Holmen and give GVSU the 6-2 lead.
Â
The Cardinals tallied a leadoff single in the first but Lipovsky delivered a strikeout and a flyout before Ramos ended the inning after catching the Cardinals trying to steal second. The Lakers added two runs to their lead in the bottom of the sixth with RBI's from Rieger and Holmen to go up 8-2 heading into the final inning.
Â
Lipovsky induced a pop-up before issuing her first walk of the game but came back and struck out the final two Cardinal batters to secure the game-one victory.
Â
Game Two (W, 2-1)
The Cardinals would once again jump out to an early lead, this time 1-0, after the first inning in what would turn out to be a pitcher's duel between Grys and the Cardinals Anna Conard. Following the one unearned run by the Cardinals in the first, neither team threatened in the second.
Â
In the bottom of the third, the Lakers got two on second and third but a groundout to the pitcher ended the threat. Neither team had anything doing in the fourth, fifth, or sixth innings, as they combined for just five hits in the six at-bats for each side.
Â
Down 1-0 heading into the seventh inning, Grys buckled down in the top half of the frame and picked up three straight strikeouts to send GVSU back up to bat down just one run in their final try.
Â
LaTour drew a walk to start the inning and once again a pinch running
Kayla Plastiak stole second before Henning delivered a huge triple off the fence in right center field to secure at least extra innings for the Lakers. With a runner on third and no outs, Flaherty and a pinch-hitting Ramos both drew walks to load the bases. Freshman Kaitlin Plocinski popped up a 3-2 pitch to second base and the Cardinals quickly threw to second for the double play. Now with runners on first and third, Conard intentionally walked Shomin to bring up Rhynard who delivered a hard-hit ball right at the shortstop who couldn't handle the play and Henning was able to score from third to end the game and give Grys her hard-fought fifth win of the season as well as GVSU's 11th straight.
Â
The Lakers will have just a day to rest up before they travel down to Ashland, Ohio to take on the Eagles in a double header on Tuesday, Mar. 27. First pitch for those games is set for 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
