GVSU Claims 9-0 Win In Series Finale At Purdue Northwest

The Grand Valley State baseball team claimed a 9-0 victory over Purdue Northwest in the series finale on Sunday (March 25) in Hammond, Indiana. GVSU earned a weekend split in the 4-game series, winning the final two games by a combined score of 15-0 and outhitting the Pride 31-13 overall on the weekend. The Laker pitching staff tallied a staff ERA of 0.88 and tossed back-to-back shutouts in GLIAC action for the first time since shutting out Ohio Dominican (10-0, 2-0) on April 5-6, 2014. The Lakers will host Tiffin in a GLIAC 4-game set starting Thursday (March 29) at 4 p.m. in the 2018 home opener. 

The Lakers got on the board first in the bottom of the second with two runs on one hit and a Purdue NW error. 1B Ryan Blake-Jones singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. C Austin LaDoux walked 3B Ricky Clark then moved the runners up with a sac bunt. DH Chase Carpenter reached on a fielder's choice error that scored Blake-Jones and Josh C. Smith then plated LaDoux with a sac fly to give GVSU a 2-0 lead. 

GVSU broke the game open with six runs on five hits and a Pride error in the bottom of the seventh. Smith tripled and SS Alex Mandeville  was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a bunt single by CF Nolan Anspaugh. LB Zach Berry doubled in three runs and RF Jacob Gleason reached on an errory. Blake-Jones singled in Berry and LaDoux walked. Gleason scored on a Clark fielder's choice and Carpenter singled in LaDooux to give GVSU an 8-0 lead.  Drake Ellens pinch hit for Anspaugh and singled to right and would eventually score on a Joey Nate single to right for the final run (9-0). 

Senior Tate Brawley picked up the win (1-1), yielding three hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Brendan Nearing and Kyle Lawson both retired the Pride in order in the final two innings. 

Berry was 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while N. Anspaugh was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Blake-Jones was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Carpenter was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
