GVSU Defeats Lewis 5-3 Saturday Afternoon

Lakers improve to 10-7 overall

Grand Valley State claimed a 5-3 road win at Lewis Saturday afternoon in Romeoville, Illinois and improves to 10-7 overall. The Lakers will complete the four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon. 

The Lakers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when LF Zach Berry singled and stole second. 1B Ryan Blake-Jones reached on an error that enabled Berry to score. Blake-Jones hit a solo HR to left on a 1-0 pitch to up the Laker lead to 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth. 

Lewis answered when a Laker error allowed a baserunner to second followed by a run scoring double. A walk, two singles and fielders choice plated two more runs to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead. 

Neither team was able to cross home plate until Chase Carpenter answered the call with a pinch hit double down the right field line. Berry moved Carpenter to third with a sac bunt and RF Jacob Gleason plated Carpenter with a sac fly to center. Freshman catcher Caleb Anspaugh led off the top of the ninth with a single to right center and pinch hitter Aaron Donald moved Anspaugh to second with a sac bunt and was safe on a throwing error. Josh Smith moved both runners up with a sac bunt and SS Alex Mandeville scored Anspaugh with a ground out to second and Donald scored on a wild pitch to give GVSU a 5-3 lead. 

Josh D. Smith, who came on in the fifth inning, picked up his first win by retiring 15 consecutive hitters, including five by strikeout. Blake Dahlstrom went the first four innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Caleb Anspaugh was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Carpenter, Berry, Blake-Jones, 3B Austin LaDoux and Donald each picked up a hit. Gleason, Blake-Jones and Mandeville each picked up an RBI.
