KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Grand Valley State Lakers fell, 7-2, in the back end of their doubleheader with No. 30 Slippery Rock Saturday afternoon at Heritage Park, forcing the Lakers to settle for a split of the twin bill after a 5-2 win in game one. The Lakers fall to 8-6 on the year while the Rock move to 4-2 this season.
Joey Nate (L, 0-1) suffered the loss for GVSU, allowing four runs – two earned – on three hits while striking out one in 1.2 innings on the hill. Ryan Tapp (W, 2-0) got the win for Slippery Rock, allowing two runs in five innings on three hits and four walks while striking out three.
A pair of errors in the second inning led to the four-run frame that put the Rock ahead for good. They would add three more runs in the fourth inning to put the Lakers in an even bigger hole in the already abbreviated seven-inning game.
The Lakers got on the board in the fourth inning when
Caleb Anspaugh singled up the middle and, after a walk and wild pitch, scored on a
Ryan Blake-Jones groundout.
Austin LaDoux followed up with a single through the left side to bring home
Jacob Gleason and cut the deficit to five (7-2). The Lakers would get two more on in the fifth, but couldn't cut into the deficit any further.
The Lakers finish their spring break Florida trip Sunday in a 10:30 AM matchup with the defending national champions and current No. 13 West Chester Rams. GVSULakers.com and @GVSUBaseball on Twitter will have live coverage of the game.
