GVSU drops 3-0 decision to Wayne State in conference action

GVSU will celebrate senior day next Saturday against Davenport

The Grand Valley State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 GLIAC tilt to the Wayne State Warriors on Saturday (Oct. 20) afternoon to fall to 12-12 overall and 5-8 in conference action. The Lakers will be back in action next Saturday (Oct. 27) as they celebrate Senior Day against Davenport.

The Lakers and Warriors posted relatively similar stats overall, with WSU leading in attack percentage (.284-.243) while the Lakers held the advantage in total kills (53-49), assists (51-48), and digs (71-69). Each team posted five total blocks as well.

Freshman Ali Thompson posted a solid afternoon, tallying 16 kills on a .233 attack percentage while chipping in 13 digs as well. Senior middle blocker Staci Brower once again posted the team's best attack percentage, hitting .483 to go along with 14 total kills and three block assists. Fellow senior Hannah Murdock tallied 10 kills as well to go along with her seven digs and one block. Defensively, libero Kendall Yerkes matched the game-high with 19 digs while setter Frankie Cavallaro chipped in 11 as well.

Much like the Lakers match last night against Ashland, the opposing team was able to jump out to an early lead on GVSU. The Warriors went up 6-2 to start the match before building up a five-point lead, 9-4. From there, the Lakers rallied for four-straight themselves to cut the lead to just one, 9-8. After some back and forth play that brought the score to 14-12, WSU went on a 5-2 run to go up 19-14. The deficit turned out to be too much for the Lakers as the Warriors would go on to win by five, 25-20.

Set two was much of the same with Wayne State going up 5-1 early. This time, the Lakers would rally back quickly to tie the match at 9-all. Once again, the middle of the set was a back and forth affair with neither team managing to pull out any sort of comfortable lead. The story would remain the same, as the teams would tie at points 23-29. With the Lakers holding the 29-28 advantage, the Warriors stormed back and tallied three straight kills to steal set two, 31-29.

GVSU flipped the script in set two, jumping out to an early 4-1 lead over the Warriors. After retaining the lead for a while, the Warriors would score nine straight points on the Lakers after a 9-6 GVSU lead to turn the match around to a 15-9 Warrior advantage. After falling down 20-12 the Lakers used one last push to try to force a fourth set, cutting the lead to 21-15 before a more manageable 22-19 to force a Warrior timeout. Once again however, the Lakers final push just wasn't quite enough and WSU would take the third set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
