The 2018 Grand Valley State Athletic Hall of Fame class will be inducted at the Hall of Fame banquet on Friday, Oct. 5, at the Kirkhof Center and then honored during halftime of the Grand Valley State-Dixie State Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 6. Pete Trammell (Jenison, Mich.), men's basketball 2005-09;
Crystal Zick (Byron Center, Mich.), women's basketball 2004-08.
This year's class will join the 149 members previously inducted into the Hall of Fame. The first GVSU Athletics Hall of Fame class was inducted in 1986 and plaques honoring all inductees are on display at the Grand Valley State Fieldhouse upper arena lobby.
Listed below are bios of the 2018 inductees.
DANIELLE ALEXANDER - VOLLEYBALL
Danielle Alexander closed her career as one of the most decorated players in terms of team accomplishments, statistics and honors. The Lakers won three GLIAC Championships, three GLIAC Tournament crowns, three NCAA Midwest Regional titles, advanced to the Elite Eight three times, Final Four twice and the National Championship game once during her career. Alexander was a part of the programs only National Championship in 2005 as the Lakers claimed the win over No. 1 seeded Nebraska-Kearney. Statistically, Alexander ranks in the top 10 of 19 career and season categories. She recorded 1,160 kills, turned in a career attack percentage of .305 and recorded 445 total blocks. Alexander earned virtually every honor possible during her career in the GLIAC, regionally and nationally. She earned AVCA First-Team All-America honors as a senior in 2008, while being a third-team honoree in 2007. In addition, she was a Daktronics, Inc. First-Team All-American in 2008. Alexander also earned all-region, All-GLIAC and Academic All-GLIAC plaudits during her career.
AARON BEEBE - SWIMMING
Aaron Beebe is the most prolific swimmer in the history of the Grand Valle State swimming and diving program, earning 26 All-America plaudits, including 10 individual honors. Beebe advanced to the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in each of his four years with the Lakers, earning individual and relay plaudits. Aaron recorded a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100 and 200 butterfly during his sophomore season, followed by runner-up finishes in the same two events as a junior. Beebe broke through as a senior, claiming individual National Championships in the 200 individual medley (1:46.31) and the 200 butterfly (1:44.00). He added a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:35.97) that senior season. Beebe claimed nine GLIAC titles total, four in the 100 and 200 butterfly and five in relay events. Beebe also earned All-GLIAC Academic and CSCAA academic honors.
DAVID KIRCUS - FOOTBALL
David Kircus established himself as one of the greatest college football receivers of all time and put up back-to-back seasons that are unmatched in terms of receptions, yards and touchdown productivity. During his career Kircus hauled in 222 receptions for 4,142 yards and 80 touchdowns, all GVSU career records. In addition, Kircus ranks first in scoring with 464 points and third in all-purpose yards with 4,908. David ranks first all-time in GLIAC history in game (5), season (26) and career touchdown receptions (57), while his 3,333 career receiving yards is third. Kircus caught 81 passes for 1,682 yards and 35 TDs in 2001 as a junior, followed by a 77-catch season in 2002 for 1,341 yards and 35 TDs. His 35 touchdown reception campaigns in 2001 and 2002 are the top single-season totals in the history of college football, regardless of division. David broke the 100-yard receiving mark 15 times during his career, including four of 200 yards or more. He caught 11 passes for 270 yards and three TDs in the 2002 National Championship game, all championship game single-game records. His last reception went for 10 yards and proved to be the game-winning touchdown that led the Lakers to their first National Championship. Kircus was a consensus All-American during the 2001 and 2002 football campaigns, while also earning GLIAC Offensive Back of the Year honors.
STEVE LYON - BASEBALL
Steve Lyon accomplished something in college baseball that no one thought was possible - turn a northern program into a national baseball power. Lyon concluded his career at the helm as the most prolific baseball coach in Laker history and he put up unmatched numbers in team success. During his 14 year career Grand Valley State was 552-205-2, including a 296-110-2 GLIAC record. Lyon guided the Lakers to nine GLIAC Championships and a 26-3 GLIAC Tournament record. In addition, the Lakers advanced to the NCAA tournament 11 consecutive years, captured five NCAA Great Lakes Regional titles and appeared in the World Series five times. GVSU played in the 2004 National Championship game and finished third at the World Series in 2005. Lyon was named GLIAC Coach of the Year three times and the ABCA Regional Coach of the Year five times. The Lakers won 40 or more games seven times and turned in one of the best single-seasons in college baseball history when they finished 52-5, including a 32-game winning streak, in 2011.
KRISTA O'DELL - TRACK/CROSS COUNTRY
Krista O'Dell was a key figure in the building of the Grand Valley State cross country and track & field national championship tradition. O'Dell turned in an incredible career, earning 10 NCAA DII All-America honors and 10 All-GLIAC honors spanning through the indoor track, outdoor track and cross country campaigns. O'Dell scored 20.5 points in NCAA indoor and outdoor championship events, while adding 112 points during her GLIAC Championship events. She was a four-time All-American in the indoor mile, while also earning honors in the 5,000m run and distance medley relay. O'Dell claimed two more All-America honors in the outdoor 1,500m run, finished eighth in the 3,000 and added an All-America honor in cross country. Krista claimed six GLIAC individual titles in the mile, 800 and DMR, while earning four additional GLIAC honors in the 3,000, 800 and twice in cross country.
PETE TRAMMELL - MEN'S BASKETBALL
Pete Trammell established himself as one of the all-time greats in Grand Valley State men's basketball history. Trammell played in (131) and started (130) more games than any other player in the history of the program. The team success during his four-year career is unmatched as GVSU went 113-20 overall, including a 66-13 GLIAC record and three GLIAC North Division crowns. The Lakers also won two GLIAC regular season titles, two GLIAC tournament titles and advanced to the GLIAC Tournament title game four times during his career. GVSU appeared in the NCAA Tournament four times, winning two NCAA Midwest Regional titles and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twice. Trammell, who ranks 24th in all-time points with 1,209, pulled down 490 rebounds, dished out 240 assists, tallied 134 steals and hit 148 three-pointers. Pete was a two-time First-Team All-GLIAC and two-time First-Team All-GLIAC Defensive Team performer.
CRYSTAL ZICK - WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Crystal Zick finished her career as one of the all-time greatest women's basketball players in the history of the program. Zick ranks in the top 10 of 11 single-season and career categories, including first in career assists with 488, second in games played with 125, fourth in both steals with 221 and three-pointers made with 146 and fifth in points with 1,570. Zick also pulled down 375 rebounds and averaged 12.6 points per game in her career. She was a part of two GLIAC regular season titles and two tournament crowns, while also winning two NCAA Midwest Regional crowns and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twice. Her crowning moment came when she hit the clinching three-pointer to win the 2006 National Championship. Zick was a three-time All-GLIAC performer, while also earning Daktronics, Inc. All-Great Lakes Region plaudits. Grand Valley State was 98-29 overall and 56-14 in GLIAC action during her career.
