Lakers dominate Purdue Northwest Saturday

Ben Lubitz hits seven threes in win over Pride

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State Lakers surpassed the century mark for the second time this season Saturday afternoon, downing the Purdue Northwest Pride, 107-65, at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. Six Lakers scored in double figures, led by seven three-pointers and 21 points from Ben Lubitz. The Lakers improve to 11-9 on the year and 6-6 in GLIAC play while the Pride fall to 1-19 on the year and 1-11 in the league.
 
The Lakers shot a season-best .615 from the field for the game, including 14-26 from beyond the arc and 13-19 from the free throw line. The Pride shot .371 from the field, going 8-24 from three and 11-16 from the stripe. GVSU dominated the glass, holding a 47-20 edge in rebounds for the contest. The Lakers turned the ball over 13 times while forcing ten giveaways by the Pride. The Lakers never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 47 in the second half.
 
Lubitz went 7-10 from downtown for all of his career-high 21 points. Chris Dorsey went a perfect 7-7 from the field for 15 points while Jake Van Tubbergen and Drake Baar each contributed 14 points, Chris Pearl scored 11 and Hunter Hale added 10 to the mix. Van Tubbergen also added a team-high 12 rebounds for the freshman's second doube-double of the season. Zach West dished out five assists to lead the Lakers to go along with five rebounds and two points.
 
Tied at 5-5 four minutes into the game, Brett Lauf hit a pair of free throws to spark a 34-7 run over the next ten minutes to take control. GVSU went on three separate runs of double digit uninterrupted points. Once the game was well decided, the Pride went on an 11-3 run in the final few minutes to cut slightly into the deficit against the Lakers' second unit.
 
The high-flying Lakers put on a show with a couple of emphatic dunks. Justin Greason stepped around the defense for an easy two-handed jam that drew a large cheer from the crowd. Van Tubbergen stole the ball at midcourt and streaked in for a one-handed jam. Six of Lubitz's threes came in the first half to help the Lakers to a 51-25 lead at the intermission.
 
The Lakers head to the Upper Peninsula for rematches with Michigan Tech on Thursday (Feb. 1) and Northern Michigan on Saturday (Feb. 3). Both games will have live stats available on gvsulakers.com and the games will air live on ESPN 96.1 FM and the iHeart app.
