Lakers Fall in GLIAC Championship to McKendree

GVSU ends season at 8-9

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The number one seeded Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team took on second seeded McKendree in the GLIAC Tournament Championship game on Sunday afternoon and fell by a score of 12-8 in a rematch from earlier this season. The Lakers came out on top in the first game this season, defeating McKendree 16-15 on April 23rd.

In the first half, Grand Valley was able to score first with Meghan Datema netting the first goal of the game off of an assist from Ryan Skomial at 24:49. McKendree scored the next two goals within one minute, taking a 2-1 lead at 23:52. GVSU would tie the game up at 2-2 less than 40 seconds later, when Abbi O'Neal scored at 23:27. The Bearcats and Lakers would trade goals, with O'Neal scoring her second goal of the game at 15:32 to keep the game tied at 3-3. McKendree would go on a three-goal run over the next four minutes, two of which came while the Bearcats were a man down. GVSU would score two of the final three goals going into the half, to cut the Bearcat lead to just 7-5 off of goals from Kelley Fitzgerald and Sarah Stagaard

After the half, the Bearcats scored the first two goals of the period at 24:57 and 24:44. The Lakers scored at 22:43 from Carly Shisler to reduce the deficit back to 9-6. McKendree would score three consecutive goals to widen the gap to six goals which would prove insurmountable for the Lakers. In the final seven minutes, GVSU scored two goals to cut the lead to 12-8, but McKendree would hold onto the lead to take the GLIAC Championship.

The Lakers were led by O'Neal in goals with two, while Kira Dosenberry, Ashley Bailey, and Fitzgerald all grabbed three ground balls, while Bailey also led the team in draw controls. Dosenberry also caused two turnovers, which put her into the top spot all time in program history. Sarah Zwilsky recorded 11 saves on the game while surrendering 12 goals.

Kelly Leibovitz, Dosenberry, Zwilsky, and Skomial earned spots on the All-GLIAC Tournament team for their efforts. The Lakers end their season at 8-9 with a 6-1 GLIAC regular season record and a share of the GLIAC regular season championship.
