SAGINAW, Mich.-- The Grand Valley State baseball team was unable to end the regular season on a high note on Sunday, dropping both games of a road doubleheader to Saginaw Valley State. Dropping the final two games of the regular season means the Lakers head into next weekend's GLIAC tournament at 29-21, and will be the five seed.
GVSU fell in the first game 7-5, falling behind 4-1 early but getting back into the game with a four-run fifth inning and taking a 5-4 lead. SVSU then scored one run in the bottom of fifth and two runs in the sixth to take a decisive 7-5 lead and would not relent.
Seth Johnson was one of two Lakers to finish with a pair of hits, and also drove in two GVSU runs as well.
Game two saw the Lakers take an early 1-0 lead on
Matt Williams RBI base-on-balls , only to see the Cardinals retaliate in a big way by scoring a pair of fourth-inning runs and tacking on seven more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead by a 9-1 score. After making some personnel changes, the Lakers plated five runs in the seventh frame to cut the margin to 9-6. The Cardinals would respond by pushing across three more runs to take a 12-6 lead, and a solo run by the Lakers in the ninth did nothing to change the end result. Johnson had a hit and drove in two more Laker runs, while Williams had two hits, two RBI and a run scored.
The Lakers will now head to Xenia, Ohio to participate in the 2017 GLIAC Tournament, and will need a strong showing there to qualify for the regional tournament. GVSU won last year's tournament in Xenia with a 6-5 victory over Walsh in the title game.
